ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT

The Department of English Language and Literature aims at preparing students who are imbibed with the knowledge of language and critical literary approaches to enable them to apply their acquired knowledge to practical situations, which in turn will help them to connect with their society and contribute in its development. As a result of such training will be responsible citizens, employees, and entrepreneurs.

 

Department of Language and Literature, English focuses on:

  1. Research oriented and career driven courses. Areas like Linguistics, ELT, Creative Writing, and Film Studies and so on, are given special attention keeping in mind the employability of the students in diverse sectors. In addition, French is offered as a non-credit course, catering to students across departments of the School of Liberal Arts and Culture Studies.
  2. Synchronous learning experience – combination of situated learning and technology enabled learning. Students also learn through several activities like performance, projects, team work, sports, making short-films, recording video and audio lectures and so on.
  3. Personal attention given to students in and outside the classroom. Continuous teacher-student interaction through mentoring system.
  4. Blend of enthusiastic young educators with experienced ones.
  5. Considerable degree of exposure to esteemed academicians and industry experts of national and international reputation.
  6. Exploring potentials of technology enhanced learning on a bigger scale.
  7. Workshops and Conferences for the student benefit and for preparing them for their future workspace.

Dr. Mukulika Dattagupta

Associate Professor and HoD – Department of English Language and Literature

An alumna of Jadavpur University Kolkata, Dr. Mukulika Dattagupta was hosted by the University of South Carolina, Aiken, USA as a Fulbright-Nehru Doctoral Research Fellow, where she has delivered regular class lectures and was also invited by the universities like The Appalachian State University, North Carolina, USA. She is also the recipient of the UGC-NET Junior Research Fellowship and has taught in the Department of Comparative Literature, Jadavpur University as a research fellow and as a guest lecturer. She has been teaching since 2006. She has also worked as a youth volunteer in a project entitled Youth Radio Report, which was a collaborative effort of UNICEF and the School of Media, Communication and Culture, Jadavpur University. She once participated as one of the team members of the United Nations Millenium Development Goal Project on Primary Education. She had the opportunity to translate a story from Hindi-Urdu to English for the book Entitled English for All edited by Prof. Nilanjana Gupta, which is a textbook for students who opt for English as an elective in Jadavpur University. Apart from that she has published translations and research papers. She believes that her diversity in research interest is her strength.
