ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT

The Department of Sociology is designed for students who wish to pursue a liberal arts education with a sociological emphasis. This major focuses on sociological perspectives as they are related to social structure, social institutions, social inequality, and the solution to social problems. The Department of Sociology is one of the activity-oriented departments in the School of Liberal Arts and Culture Studies which provides students sociological perspective to develop a critical understanding of society.

  9. Students have presented their papers at National and International conferences and have also published their works in UGC-CARE Journals.
  10. Students have completed their internship in NGOs like Anudip Foundation, CINI, Talaash with stipend.
  11. The Department has organized workshop in collaboration with INDIAN INSTITUTE OF CEREBRAL PALSY (IICP), Kolkata.

Dr. Biswajit Ghosh

Associate Dean of SoLACS and Head of the Department of Sociology

Dr. Biswajit Ghosh has recently retired as the Vice Chancellor of The University of Burdwan, West Bengal. Being a Professor of Sociology, he taught, supervised, and conducted research on certain emergent issues of the discipline of Sociology for 37 years. He studied in The University of Calcutta and Jawaharlal Nehru University. He also served as a Visiting Faculty in many universities including a few foreign universities. He has authored 110 articles, including reviews, e-contents, and study modules, and written three major policy documents of UNICEF, Govt. of West Bengal, and Save the Children. He has edited/written following 6 books: i) Exploring Social Movements: Theories, Experiences, and Trends (2024, Taylor and Francis); ii) Social Movement: Concepts, Issues and Experiences from India (2020, Sage), iii) Methodology of Research in Sociology (2018, Inflibnet e- book), iv) Social Movements (2018, Inflibnet e-book), v) Interrogating Development: Discourses on Development in India Today (2012, Rawat Publication) and vi) Pariveshvidya (2012, The University of Burdwan). Currently, he is engaged in editing a volume entitled The Dialectics of Development: Challenges and Contestations (Cambridge). He was a Module Coordinator of UGC E-Pathshala e- content on Research Methodology and Social Movement Courses in Sociology. He has 950 Google citations to his credit. He is in the editorial board of many reputed journals.

As per the AD Scientific Index of World Scientists 2025 (https://www.adscientificindex.com/), Prof.

Ghosh’s rank is 1st in the whole of Eastern India, 11th in India, and 184th in Asia.

He is currently working as Senior Fellow of Indian Council of Social Science Research (ICSSR).

Areas of his research and teaching interests include: Society and Culture in India, Indian Sociology, Industrial Sociology, Sociology of Development & Environment, Social Movements, and Gender Studies. He was a member of the Managing Committee of Indian Sociological Society (ISS) from 2014-2019, Treasurer of ISS in between 2016-17).
