Student Performance by the Department of English Language and Literature Breathes Life into Soyinka’s A Dance of the Forests
The performance of A Dance of the Forests by the students of M.A. English Language and Literature, Semester 2, was a compelling interpretation of Wole Soyinka’s complex and symbolic play. With a deep understanding of the text’s thematic richness—especially its critique of post-independence optimism and exploration of ancestral legacies—the students brought the characters to life through expressive dialogue, using handmade masks, dubbing dialogues and thoughtful staging. Their portrayal captured the mystical and allegorical essence of the play, effectively conveying its philosophical depth and cultural resonance. The performance not only demonstrated academic engagement with African dramatic literature but also highlighted the students’ creativity and dedication to theatrical expression.
