Introduction to the course

The subject of History is said to cover man’s growth towards civilisation and henceforth. Thus it is an entirely interdisciplinary study with relationship in the fields of economics, politics, society and literature, inculcating a spirit of enquiry about the past and present of man in society to step out cautiously in future.
History is a interdisciplinary subject which covers a wide range of topics like economic, social and cultural studies.

What are the learning outcomes?

The study of History unfolds comprehensive awareness in various aspects of human lives for which learners

  • Become well-equipped to appear in various Competitive Examinations
  • Pursue profession as Historical Researcher
  • Become an Archaeologist as Archaeology is an important correlated Discipline
  • Work as a Museum Curator as History is related to the study of Museums
  • Serve as an Archivist
  • Furthering the knowledge of History by working as Teachers and Professors

List of Generic Electives:
As a part of the B.A. (Hons) programme, it is mandate to study two allied disciplines other than the Honours subject. For that the students need to choose any two disciplines from the list below.

3. Geography
4. Sociology
5. Public Administration
6. International Relations
7. Journalism & Mass Communication
8. Psychology

Internships/Project work:
The Department with the aid of the University, Career Development Cell facilitates the process of Internships for students— Sukanna Kundu, Katyani Sikidhar, Medemkala Longchar of UG IV Sem were helped to appear for Internship at the RICE GROUP held on the campus on 15thof April, 2019. The CDC and its Head of the Department is also trying to look for the internship of the students in Archaeological Institution and Museum Center at Kolkata.
This is the First Batch of students who would go for Internship.

Placement & Career Opportunities / Research Opportunities
The Course helps students appearing for Civil Services and other Competitive Examinations, as also if supplemented with Courses in Programming or Management, can lead into careers in ‘Big-Data analyses,’ ‘Brand Management’, Marketing, Advertising etc. It also opens the door for research in various areas of the subject.
Pulosto Choudhury an Alumni of 2017, M.A, Department of History, is undergoing coaching in RICE GROUP, Belgharia, Kolkata in order to compete in West Bengal Civil Service Examinations.
Swati Singh, M.A in History, also an Alumni of 2018 is preparing for undertaking Research in History( Ph.D).

Eligibility
50% overall in 10+2 with respective subjects

The 2 years postgraduate programme in History includes all courses in accordance with UGC guidelines. It cnsists of courses on Indian History, European History and also offers a basket of Elective and Specialised papers. The MA programme also trains the students in writing dissertations.

Benifits: –
1. The Masters programme trains the student in developing an in-depth understanding of history.
2. The student will be prepared for exams like NET and academic teaching positions.
3. The MA dissertation course trains the student for further research like MPhil and PhD.
4. The students are also trained in proposal writing and other skills for applying for further research abroad.

50% overall in Graduation in with respective subject

Admission Procedure
Admission to the course will take place in terms of the Admission Notification issued by the University every year before the commencement of the academic session. Selection for admission to the course will be based on the eligibility criteria, performance in the admission test and also on the policy of reservation, if any, as indicated in the admission notification

Summer School / Winter School / Projects
Summer School in Different International Universities/ Internship in Various NGOs and Corporate Organizations

Career Placement
1.Teaching positions.
2. Civil Services and other government jobs.
3. Research positions at various Social Science research institutes.
4. NGO jobs and social activism.
5. Jobs at media houses, art history magazines.
6. Further research like MPhil and PhD.
